Low Rhine and Danube Levels Disrupt European Industry
Severe drought is reducing water levels in the Rhine and Danube, creating new problems for European industry and inland logistics.
Companies in Germany’s industrial regions are restricting production and struggling to move cargo. In Romania and Hungary, low river levels have also affected nuclear power generation because plants lack sufficient cooling water.
Hungary recorded its lowest Danube level on record, while Romania used explosives to redirect water toward the remaining operating reactor at the Cernavodă nuclear plant.
River transport loses capacity in shallow water
Barges must reduce their loads when river depth falls.
The result can include:
- higher freight per metric ton;
- more voyages for the same volume;
- delays in raw-material deliveries;
- limited barge availability;
- congestion at transshipment terminals;
- increased demand for rail and road transport.
Bulk chemicals, minerals, fuels and fertilizers are especially exposed because they often move in large volumes by inland waterway.
Energy costs are also increasing
Reduced nuclear output has forced Hungary and Romania to rely more heavily on imported electricity.
This affects industrial users through:
- higher wholesale power prices;
- reduced production reliability;
- possible consumption restrictions;
- increased operating costs;
- pressure on processing and storage facilities.
The drought therefore affects both logistics and production economics at the same time.
Implications for fertilizer and chemical deliveries
A CIF or CFR price to a European seaport does not necessarily include the full risk of final inland delivery.
Buyers should confirm:
- river navigability;
- available barge capacity;
- alternative rail or truck routes;
- terminal storage;
- transshipment costs;
- realistic delivery windows.
The ocean leg may remain unchanged while inland transport becomes the most expensive part of the supply chain.
