Hormuz Blockade Drives Global Fertilizer Shortages and Cost Pressure

The near-total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is contributing to global fertilizer shortages, increasing concern about agricultural input availability and future food-production costs.

The disruption is now being felt beyond Gulf energy markets. Farmers in Europe are reporting that fertilizer availability and cost are being affected at the same time as drought reduces crop yields and strains farm economics.

The head of the International Rescue Committee has described the fertilizer situation as a potential "food security timebomb."

Supply-chain disruption is reaching farms

The problem is not simply a higher benchmark fertilizer price.

Ongoing disruption around Hormuz affects the physical movement of fertilizer and fertilizer feedstocks, making availability, freight and shipment timing more difficult for importers to manage.

Mark Preston of Grosvenor said concerns raised earlier in the year remain active, with disruption continuing to affect both availability and cost.

For farmers, that uncertainty complicates purchasing decisions ahead of future application periods.

Drought increases the pressure on input economics

The fertilizer disruption is occurring during an exceptionally difficult agricultural season.

Almost three-quarters of England is in drought, wheat in some areas has grown to only about half its normal height and yields for some crops have fallen sharply.

Extreme weather reduces farm margins just as fertilizer supply becomes more expensive and less predictable.

That combination can influence application rates, planting decisions and ultimately the volume and quality of future harvests.

Delivered fertilizer cost matters more than FOB price

For importers, the current market reinforces the importance of looking beyond the producer's nominal price.

Freight availability, insurance, route access, transit delays and replacement-origin costs can materially change the economics of a fertilizer cargo before it reaches the buyer.

If Hormuz disruption persists, buyers may need to diversify origins, secure tonnage earlier and carry more inventory to protect against delays.

The fertilizer market is therefore becoming increasingly logistics-driven, with physical availability and delivery reliability taking a larger role alongside product specification and outright price.
