Aluminium Fluoride — Essential Bath Modifier in Al Smelting
Aluminium fluoride lowers the operating temperature of the cryolite-alumina electrolysis bath from 1000°C toward 950°C, reducing energy consumption per tonne of aluminium produced by 3–5%. Smelter-grade AlF3 at 90% minimum with 58% fluorine and SiO₂ below 0.3% integrates into bath chemistry without disrupting current efficiency. A critical consumable for primary aluminium smelters in the Gulf, India and Southeast Asia. From 200 MT.

Smelter Integration
AlF3 is added to the electrolysis cell bath to maintain the NaF/AlF₃ ratio (cryolite ratio) at 2.1–2.3. Delivery in bulk bags or pneumatic tanker for direct injection into bath makeup systems. Fe₂O₃ below 0.05% prevents iron contamination of molten aluminium. FOB/CIF to smelter site or port warehouse.
FAQ
How much AlF3 does a typical smelter consume per tonne of aluminium?
Consumption averages 5–8 kg AlF3 per tonne of aluminium produced, depending on cell technology and bath chemistry management. Modern prebake cells at the lower end; legacy Soderberg cells higher.
What happens if AlF3 purity drops below 90%?
Impurities — mainly Al(OH)₃ and residual H₂SiF₆ — alter bath conductivity and increase anode consumption. Smelters typically reject batches below specification to avoid costly cell disturbance.
Is AlF3 classified as hazardous for transport?
AlF3 powder is an irritant and requires dust control during loading. It is not classified as dangerous goods for sea transport in most jurisdictions when properly packaged, but local regulations should be verified.
